Easy Ways to Measure Tire Tread Depth

A tire’s tread depth is crucial for safe driving, proper traction, and overall performance. As tires wear over time, their ability to grip the road decreases, increasing the risk of hydroplaning and accidents.

Tire tread depth is measured from the top of the rubber tread to the bottom of the deepest grooves. Most new tires start with a tread depth between 10/32” and 12/32”. According to safety standards, tires must be replaced once the tread depth reaches 2/32”.

The good news? You don’t need special equipment or a professional inspection to check your tire tread. Below are four easy and reliable ways to measure tire tread depth at home.

1. Penny Test

This method only requires a US penny coin. Place the penny with Lincoln’s head upside down into the shallowest groove on the tire. If all of Lincoln's head is visible above the tread, you only have 2/32" or less tread depth remaining and it's time to replace your tires.

2. Quarter Test

For those who want an earlier warning for tire replacement, use a quarter to test the depth instead. Place the quarter with Washington’s head upside down into the shallowest groove. If all of Washington's head is visible above the tread, you have 4/32" or less tread depth left.

3. Gauge Test

A gauge test is the most accurate way to know a tread depth and can be found online or at your local store. All gauges should measure in the 1/32". To measure, place the gauge inside any tire tread and push down, then remove the gauge carefully. You will get an accurate measurement of the tread depth.

4. Indicator Bar Test

Another method is to use an indicator bar, which is a built-in measurement of tire tread. The bars are located in random positions inside the tread grooves of your tire. When these bars line up with the adjacent ribs in the tire, there is 2/32" of tread or less remaining. In this case, the tires are completely worn out and should be replaced.
